How would this cam work for me? Would it be ok for my 10-1 compression? Would it have a rough idle? I would like to try an Elgin cam, I have used Comp Cams and Crane in the past, the Elgin's are alot cheaper.

I'm getting my info out of a Northern Auto Parts catalog. I'm wondering why the big dirrence, if the specs are the same.

The Crane cam has a basic rpm range of 2800-6200, that is quite a bit higher than the 2200-5500 Elgin rpm range. This cam has the same specs as a Crane Energizer 284. It also says the basic rpm range is 2200-5200. The Elgin cam has 284 duration,, 480 lift, and 112 lobe separation. I also found another Elgin cam that is similar to the comp magum 280. I haven't been able to find what compression ratio they recommend for that cam. I have checked the specs on the comp magnum 280 and it starts amking power at 2000 and goes to 6000. I do have a 4 speed so the cam I choose can start making power around 2000 rpm. I don't plan on spinning my 406 past 5500. In the end, its still best to call the manufacturer of choice so that they can specifically narrow down the converter choice.Alot of the cams that are recommended for high compression have a high rpm range. Give us as much specs as you can and we will give you a better idea of what you should be using. This is a good cam for street rods with a high stall converter Rough Idle With Lope, Good Mid Range Torque in the 3000-4000 RPM Range, Gives Strong Pulling Power in 2000-5000 Range.

You can expect the 468 to produce much more torque than the 327, and even though they both use the same cam, the extra torque in the 468 alone will cause the exact same torque converter to stall much higher behind the 468 than it ever did behind the 327. ENGINE PRO MC1993 Hydraulic Flat Tappet Stage 4 Camshaft for Chevy SBC 262, 265, 267, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400 C.I. Now say you build a 468 with a voodoo 268 cam. Say you have a 327 with the voodoo 268 cam in it and a converter that actually stalls around 2700rpm. One factor that determines stall speed is torque. Vehicle weight, transmission type, engine size, rear gearing, compression ratio, intake manifold type and everything else are all things that also determine what stall speed you need aside from just the camshaft. Stall speed is all relative to everything. That cam is fairly wicked in a 350 or smaller. The voodoo 276 should be reserved for a larger displacement small block unless you want a pretty rad engine. Its comparable to the XE 274 and faster than the XE 268. I dont know what size engine you got or anything else, but off the top of my head, the voodoo 268 is a good sized camshaft for most hot street small block chevys without being radical. All of this makes for a very powerful camshaft with less noise, less valvetrain abuse, and less chance for failure than the XE cams. And they are A symmetrical camshafts with a slower closing ramp to eliminate noise among other things. They provide more average area under the curve, but with less peak valve acceleration. Camshaft - Xtreme Energy - Hydraulic Flat Tappet - Lift 0.490 / 0.490 in - Duration 274 / 286 - 110 LSA - 1800 / 6000 RPM - Small Block Chevy - Each. Kinda like a step up from the extreme energy camshaft.

So, most of the noise you hear is the valves closing. Your typical solid closes the valve 200-300 percent quicker than the typical hydro. Aside from valve lash, thats the same reason solid flat tappet and roller cams are noisy cause they close the valves even quicker yet.

what you are hearing is the valves actually slamming shut at a higher rate than your typical hydro cams do. What its all about is the fact that the modern aggressive design of the lobe has faster valve events than your typical hydraulic camshaft.
